The Editor:
Last week 40 BHS band students and parents made and sold 360 strawberry pies as a fund raiser for the wind ensemble’s trip to the 2011 Funabashi Music Festival next January. With the community’s generous support and help with underwriting our costs, we made over $10 per pie towards our goal. Thank you, Blaine.
The students worked hard and showed their eagerness to earn the funds needed for their trip to Tokyo. The cost of the trip is $2,600 per student. If you have projects you need help with, please keep them in mind.
I also would like to express my appreciation and congratulations to the gang at The Northern Light. For 15 years you have provided such a wonderful fence post for the community to gather and get informed, thanks!
On behalf of the Blaine Wind Ensemble we are so grateful. Mark your calendar now for our next event, “Thursdays at the Bay,” August 12, 19 and 26 from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. at the Blaine Marine Park Amphitheater. We’ll bring the music and the sunset, you bring the community. Donations accepted to benefit the band to Japan efforts.

Am I the only person who complains about the southbound border wait times for NEXUS holders? I cross the border several times a week. Seldom is the wait more than a few minutes returning to B.C. when using the NEXUS lane. Typically, when I drive up to the booth after swiping my card the Canadian agent looks at me, looks at the screen and says go ahead or have a nice day and actually smiles.
Going south is a crapshoot. If you happen to be traveling south at the wrong time, you may end up waiting up to 30 minutes in the NEXUS lane. On a long weekend, don’t be surprised to be waiting up to 90 minutes!
Why do NEXUS holders have to put up with such long waits going south compared to going north? NEXUS card holders have had a background check, been fingerprinted, photographed, interviewed and issued what apparently is supposed to be a secure ID card that can’t be forged yet some U.S. border guards continue to ask 20 questions instead of relying on random checks with zero tolerance. Where are you going? Purpose of your trip? Why are you going there? How often do you come down? Are you meeting anyone there? Are they Canadian or U.S.? Are they friends? When are you returning? Anything to declare? (Good question, the only one that should be asked.)
Some U.S. border guards seem to grasp the trusted traveler concept and when they man the booth, things move along reasonably. Unfortunately, there is no consistency among them which leads me to the conclusion that there is a lack of proper training specifically related to the Nexus lane.
This has been an ongoing problem since the NEXUS program was introduced. I am sure that U.S. business owners would be happy to see more business in these difficult economic times.
Unless the border guards change their ways, you are going to see less business as people get fed up with the ridiculous waits and cancel their golf memberships, move their yachts to Canadian waters and return to shopping in Canada.

The Editor:
It was nice to see all over the media that every outlet paying tribute to the veterans and on behalf of all veterans, thank you for the tributes you paid to the men and women who have given it all to make the Fourth of July what it is supposed to be, our ability to be free to be able to celebrate the birth of this nation and our constitution of laws.
Although the media on the left tribute was as shallow as it gets because of their dislike of the military, the constitution and the laws of this country.
But what everyone forgets is the tribute we should also pay to the men and women who protect our borders, both north and south. These people work 24 hours a day, seven days a week to make our country safe by keeping unwanted people and drugs out of this country. Also, pay tribute to the men and women in uniform who make our town safe for people to live here and raise our children as best we can away from the crime of big cities.
It should not matter what uniform these men and women put on their backs, they all deserve the respect of the position they hold and the jobs they perform day in and day out, in all kinds of weather and circumstance and to those families who have lost loved ones in the service of their country or town.
God bless your families and keep you safe from harm.

The Editor:
I would like to thank all the people who helped me out with the July 4th car show. I had two great workers with me that day, Denise O’Donnell and Debbie Scherck. It was a great success again.
There were a total of 230 cars. It takes a lot to get this going and I really appreciate all the help. There were those who donated gifts for the goodie bag, donations for the trophies, those who donated money to help buy the gifts and those that volunteered with parking cars. This would not have been a success were it not for all these people.
