Students take a respectable fifth place

Facing the best brains from around the Northwest, Blaine’s math team came out swinging at the Northwest Math Championship last weekend.

The Blaine high school team of Justin Vinall, Kyle Teutsch and Brian Chang took fifth place in the competitive 11/12th grade division, while Chang also tied for 10th in the individual event.

Sponsored by Tosco Ferndale Refinery and hosted by the Blaine school district, the event brought together 285 10th through 12th graders and 75 teams from 20 schools across the Northwest. Students compete in individual tests, which are followed by team events in geometry, algebra, trigonometry and mental math.

Elementary and middle school students will get their chance to grab the glory at the Whatcom County Math Championship, March 3, and the state math championship, to be held in Blaine on March 31.
