Marina starts work on storm repairs
The
Semiahmoo Marina breakwater is being stabilized after it
failed to hold in a Christmas storm.
There was some new construction and it failed. We
dont know why, said acting marina manager Jan
Frasier. Frasier said she was not willing to give an estimate
of the extent of the damage or the cost of repairs.
Crews from Bellingham Marine Industries are on site now
to reinforce the breakwater. Theyre going to
put something in there to replace the breakwater and work
on it in sections this summer, Frasier said. She added
her understanding was that 1,200 feet of barges would provide
temporary protection from high waves for boats moored at
the marina.
Some tenants of the marina have reported cleats pulled from
docks and four-foot swells inside the marina.
According to Frasier, the failure of the breakwater has
not led to significantly more damage to boats than in other
winters. Theres always damage to vessels in
the marina, she said. Not especially from that
but from wind and then not being tied up properly.
