Shea to speak at chamber meeting

Ellen Shea, developer of the proposed retreat on Birch Point, will speak at the Birch Bay Chamber of Commerce meeting next Tuesday, to clarify her plans and answer questions.

Shea, who hopes to open a retreat at a 12,000 square-foot former residence on 10 acres, announced her intentions last fall. Because she plans to open a business, the 10 acres must be rezoned from urban residential to urban commercial, and the project has caused some mixed emotions within the community.

Although the chamber has not endorsed the project, chamber officials feel the meeting will be a good chance for the business community and residents to hear first-hand what Sheas project entails, said Ruth Lauman, a chamber director responsible for events and marketing.

The Whatcom county planning commission voted down the project in January; however, county council can decide to hold a public hearing and vote on the matter themselves.

The chamber meeting, scheduled for Tuesday, February 17, starts at noon and is held at Stephanis Restaurant at 7878 Birch Bay Drive, and costs $10 per person. If you wish to attend this meeting please RSVP to info@birchbaychamber.com or call the chamber office at 371-5004 by Friday, February 13. The public is encouraged and welcome to attend this meeting.
