Sartain, Woronuik honored

The Mt. Baker Chapter of the American Red Cross presented Fire Hero Awards to Brenna Woronuik of Blaine and Blaine police detective Dan Sartain last Friday, December 10 in Bellingham.  The pair were honored for rescuing Dr. Phil Walrod, 83, and his live-in care-giver Gordon Schmautz from Walrod’s house at 1578 D street last July 5 at 3 a.m. as it burned, suffering over $180,000 in damage. It was later determined that the blaze was ignited by neighborhood fireworks. Walrod was unhurt but Schmautz suffered first and second degree burns over much of his upper body.

Awards were presented to over 20 groups and individuals in thirteen different categories at a fundraising breakfast attended by over 350 people, hosted by the chapter at Bellingham's Lakeway Inn.
