Volunteers needed for state math championship

You don’t have to be a math whiz to lend a hand at the 2005 Washington State Math Championship Saturday, March 19, at the Blaine school campus. Volunteers are needed to serve as proctors and test correctors.

The event is underwritten by ConocoPhillips Ferndale Refinery and coordinated and hosted by Blaine school district. Nearly 1,400 fifth to eighth graders from 90 schools are expected to compete.

The competition starts with each youngster competing individually. After finishing that test, teams of three or four students compete on tests in Probability & Statistics, Algebra, Geometry and Potpourri.

Proctors ensure teams are in the correct classroom, explain and enforce rules, and read mental math test questions aloud to the competitors. Proctors start with an orientation at 8 a.m. and supervise a classroom from 9:30 a.m. to 12:10 p.m.

Correctors receive their orientation at 9:30 a.m. and serve until all tests are corrected or about 1:30 p.m.

Lunch will be provided for proctor and corrector volunteers.
