Fields hired as new NWFRS chief

By Jack Kintner

North Whatcom Fire and Rescue Services (NWFRS) has hired a new chief to replace former chief Dave Crossen, whose contract expired at the end of 2004 and was not renewed. To replace Crossen the board has hired Tom Fields, former fire chief of Whatcom County Fire District 2 and currently chief of the Camano Island fire department. The hiring is effective now though Fields will not be on the job full time until June.

NWFRS board member Bill Salter said, “We wanted someone who knows the local scene, especially the issues around emergency medical services, and with his experience in district 2 (Sudden Valley, where Fields now lives) he’s ideal.”

Fields was not a part of the original crop of 12 candidates, but had been involved with NWFRS as a computer consultant. When he learned of the position he placed himself in the running in order to work closer to home.

Fields is currently in Alaska attending to family matters and was unavailable for comment.
