City considers water moratorium
Blaine city council has scheduled a July 11 public hearing to discuss withholding new water service connections from properties outside the city limits to the east of the city.
According to public works director Steve Banham the proposal is to slow development outside city limits while the city looks at comprehensive plan revisions and potential changes to the limits of it’s urban growth area (UGA).
Many properties east of the city get water through the Blaine utility due to their participation in the Sweet Road Water Association that the city took over in 1992. Banham said the city was not proposing cutting anyone off or denying water connections to former association members, but only to properties outside city limits and not part of the old association. “The city will honor the commitments made,” he said.
