Enjoy a sunset concert in the park

The North Cascades Concert Band will perform at the Sculptures, Sunsets and Serenades concert at Blaine Marine Park from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m., Saturday, July 23, featuring light band classics and rousing band marches. Listeners are invited to bring their own chairs and dinner for the lawn picnic during the concert. The event features a tour of sculpture exhibits in Peace Arch Park and downtown Blaine and is sponsored by the United States-Canada Peace Anniversary Association.

The North Cascades Concert Band is the collaboration of more than 50 musicians from Anacortes, Arlington, Bellingham, Blaine, Burlington, Bow, Camano Island, Everett, Ferndale, Mercer Island, Mount Vernon, Marysville, Oak Harbor, Redmond, Stanwood, and Sedro-Woolley.

The musical director of the concert band is Lylburn Layer, of Mercer Island. Layer taught fine arts and worked as a high school assistant principal in the Mercer Island school district for 22 years. He retired in July of 1998 and now spends his time private teaching, performing and conducting. For more information about the event, call 332-7165.
