Center signs up supermarket

by Jack Kintner

A California couple has announced plans to build and operate Scott’s Marketfresh, a 25,000-square-foot grocery store at Birch Bay Square, formerly the Peace Arch Factory Outlet Mall, in Custer at exit 270 on I-5.

Sandra and Philip Scott sold their grocery store earlier this year in the Santa Barbara suburb of Los Olivos, California, and hope to finish their new store, a stand alone anchor in the north end of the mall, by next March. He expects to hire 40 to 50 people when the store is fully operational.

Brian Finnegan, leasing agent for the mall, said “they came to us last spring with a plan for a boutique style store with a lot of variety. It’s a concept that fits in well with what we want to do here.”

Scott said his store will have a bakery and full-service deli, an extensive wine department and a fresh meat department, and will feature locally grown foods.

Scott’s family has been in the grocery business for 60 years. He anticipates his new location will draw customers from Birch Bay, Blaine and Lynden as well as Custer, an area that drew his interest because of the anticipated growth over the next several years.
