Opportunity Council offers help to those facing expensive winter heating bills
The Opportunity Council’s Energy Assistance program gave 150 heating assistance grants to low-income residents Saturday, November 5, as part of the Low Income Home Energy Assistance Program (LIHEAP).
Appointments for LIHEAP grants are available on a first-come, first-serve, monthly basis to provide help with heat and energy bills. This applies to income-eligible clients who heat with electric, natural gas, propane, wood and oil.
The next opportunity to recieve the grant will be Saturday, December 10 at the Opportunity Council’s office at 1111 Cornwall Avenue in Bellingham. Scheduling begins at 8 a.m. and the number of appointments available for walk-ins is limited.
Additional dates will be scheduled for early 2006.
The Opportunity Council is a private, non-profit, community action agency governed by a volunteer board of directors equally representing the private, public and low-income sectors of Island, San Juan and Whatcom counties.
This year the Opportunity Council is celebrating 40 years of providing programs that “help people help themselves,” including emergency and transitional housing, energy assistance, early childhood education and child care resources.
