August 22 last day for vigil donations
August 22 is the last day for the sale of bricks, pavers, placement requests and donations for The Vigil, a bronze sculpture planned for the H Street plaza portion of Blaine’s boardwalk.
“All those who have been procrastinating should know that August 22 is the last day,” said Bruce Wolf, chair of the Pacific Arts Association’s Vigil committee. “We want to install the commemorative bricks by the end of August.”
After August 22, Wolf said the committee will still sell bronze pavers, but the next installation won’t happen until spring of 2007. “We would still take donations, but we’d probably wait six months before we had a number of pavers and put in another order,” he said.
Wolf said while most of money has been raised for the construction of the statue, the committee is still looking for funds to improve the G Street plaza and install benches near the sculpture. Wolf said there is also talk of a possible interpretive plaque.
“We have raised at least $175,000,” he said. “However, we probably underestimated by $5,000 to $10,000.”
The dedication of the sculpture is scheduled for October 14.“We’re close enough to know it will be dedicated by then,” he said. “It’s exciting that people are so behind this. And as long as people want to give, we want to improve it and make it more useable.”
