Gang rumors unfounded, police say

By Jack Kintner

Blaine school district superintendent Ron Spanjer, in response to rumors of gang activity at Blaine middle school last week, said there’s no evidence of “anything like that going on, on his watch” and “that kind of dialog will not be tolerated.”

A letter went out to middle school parents on March 21 that said a small number of middle school students on campus were trying to recruit a gang.

“Behavior of this nature has been, and will continue to be, dealt with in an immediate and conclusive manner, with the students confirmed to be involved being emergency expelled from school,” the letter continued.

Spanjer confirmed that there had been a fight on school grounds in addition to the talk about gangs.

“These things happen occasionally, and we dealt with it,” he said, “but we do not have any evidence that the fight a week and a half ago is connected in any way to this incident.”

He said he’d gone over the incidents with Blaine police chief Mike Haslip, Sgt. Ryan King, middle school principal Darren Benson and assistant principal Aaron Smith.
