Jazz festival to open with Latin beat

By Jack Kintner

The week-long seventh annual Blaine Jazz Festival kicks off this year on Monday, July 9 with Listen to the Rhythm, a hot Latin group that will bring interpretive dance along with music heavily flavored with Cuban and Brazilian rhythms to the stage at the Blaine school’s Performing Arts Center (PAC).

It’s one of five evening concerts throughout the week, and brings dance to the main stage for the first time. Each concert will be previewed on the same day with a free lunch hour mini-concert at noon on the Blaine boardwalk’s G Street plaza.

Student registrations for the Jazz Camp for Teens are going briskly, said festival coordinator Sandy Wolf. “We have 55 signed up already and have room for 40 or 50 more,” she said. “We especially need trombone and trumpet players.” Tuition for the week is $250, and room and board for the week is $350. Donations will be accepted for scholarships. Tickets for the Monday through Thursday evening concerts are $20 for general admission and $10 for students.
