Blaine man hit, killed on Peace Portal

By Jack Kintner

A Blaine man died Sunday evening after being struck by a car in a crosswalk near the intersection of Clark and Peace Portal Drive.
Leif Hesselroth, 84, died after being transported to St. Joseph Hospital in Bellingham along with his 34-year-old wife, Roselle Hesselroth, who was also injured.

Blaine police chief Mike Haslip said the couple appeared to be crossing Peace Portal Drive westbound at about 4:30 p.m. when struck by a southbound Kia driven by Blaine resident Charles Cushman, 63.

The incident closed Peace Portal Drive for several hours Sunday evening.

Blaine police chief Mike Haslip said neither speed nor obstructed vision appeared to be factors in the accident.

Cushman was tested for evidence of drugs or alcohol at St. Joseph but the test results were not available. Haslip said the Washington State Patrol are still investigating the accident.

“We do not have a specific cause for the collision and there are no witnesses at this point,” Haslip said.

As of Wednesday, Roselle Hesselroth remains in St. Joseph Hospital with “significant” injuries, Haslip said.
