Local couple starts ride-share program
With the rising cost of gas, a Birch Bay couple has taken the initiative to help her fellow neighbors.
Ruth Higgins, chair of the Emergency Preparedness taskforce of the Birch Bay Steering Committee’s public safety and transportation subcommittee, and her husband Al Krause said they have organized a trial ride share program from their Birch Bay blog.
“It’s truly an experiment,” she said. “But I figure we’ve all got to do something because the situation likely isn’t going to get any better before it gets worse.”
Higgins said while the program is still in its experimental phase, there are still several guidelines users must follow: Drivers and vehicles used must be insured; users must be picked up and dropped off where stated unless by agreement; no charges may be involved, although small donations are optional; participation is voluntary and no liability is assumed by blog managers; users should call contact at least 12 hours prior to departure time in case of a change in plans.
Higgins and Krause are local freelance writers who retired from the health care and public relations fields. The couple regularly publishes independent stories on growth, business and the Birch Bay community on their blog located at www.birchbayblog.blog-spot.com.
