Habitat group seeks Blaine support

By Tara Nelson

Whatcom County’s chapter of Habitat For Humanity is seeking support within the Blaine community to advise them on their local efforts.

As the county-wide chapter seeks to build their third Habitat For Humanity house in Blaine, associate director Terry Mattson said they are seeking individuals who are willing to serve on an advisory board or steering committee to help with family selection.

“We’re trying to get more involved in local cities by having a steering committee here,” he said. “I think it would reflect more of what’s best for Blaine.”

Mattson said they will also be looking for business sponsors as well as contractors who are looking to donate services and volunteers who are looking to donate labor.

He added that while there is a lot of interest from families in the area for affordable housing, the agency has a short supply of land, which makes it important to make the right selection.

Precedence is usually given to families with children and who work and plan on staying in the Blaine area, he said. Other factors are based on financial need.
