A 17-year-old Birch Bay boy led Whatcom County sheriff’s deputies on a three-hour chase last week but was finally captured and taken into custody in a wooded area near the 4600 block of Anderson Road.
According to Sheriff Bill Elfo, a deputy was attempting to take a 17-year-old juvenile into custody on warrants for burglary and car prowl as well as a court order directing that he be taken into custody as a runaway. As the juvenile was being taken into custody at about 2:30 p.m. he bolted.
Eight sheriff’s vehicles and at least as many deputies joined in the chase and thanks to tips from citizens cornered the lad in the woodlot and took up stations with their lights flashing on a perimeter that ran along a stretch of both Anderson and Harborview roads.
He was finally flushed and captured about 5:30 p.m., and was taken to St. Joseph Hospital suffering from mild hypothermia. Once treated and released, he was booked into the juvenile detention center. Because of his age, his name is not being published.
