Blaine and Birch Bay residents now have more shopping choices when it comes to hardware, houseware, garden and do-it-yourself home improvement items.
A group of eight Whatcom County friends recently opened a 12,600-square foot ACE Hardware store in Blaine’s International Center. Their grand opening is scheduled for Friday through Sunday, March 27 through 29. The event will include a ribbon cutting with refreshments at 11 a.m. Friday, as well as prizes, coffee, donuts, musical performances and radio broadcasts by KISM 92.9 all three days.
Co-owners Dan Backstrom said he, his wife, Heather, and friends Paul and Lisa Porter, Karl and Jen Frombly, and Brad and Margie Backstrom were looking to open a hardware store for several years.
They opened ACE Hardware in January offering housewares and accessories, as well as lawn, garden and outdoor living goods, barbecues and Benjamin Moore paints in addition to basic hardware.
“We want people to know we’re more than just hardware,” Backstrom said. “We’re not just nuts and bolts.”
Co-owner Paul Porter said although there may be a misconception ACE is owned by a large, outside corporation, the store is actually locally-owned and independently-operated as a buying co-op rather than a franchise.
“There’s this misconception that we are some outsiders,” he said. “But we’re not. We’re local boys born and raised in Whatcom County, live in Deming, who wanted to own a hardware store. We didn’t want a cookie cutter store.”
Backstrom added that he plans to have a full selection of green cleaning products in store soon and that customers also have access to more than 80,000 Ace Hardware items on their website, www.acehardware.com, which can be delivered to the store at no additional cost.
ACE Hardware is located at 1733 H Street, Suite 700 in Blaine and is open from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. Monday through Saturday and from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Sundays. They can be reached by calling 360/933-1594.
