Even the most hair-ridden dogs can have their moment in the sun this weekend as pet owners vie to see whose pet sheds the most in five minutes.

The event is one of several unusual contests hosted by Bow Wow & Woofs of Birch Bay as part of its first-ever Bark On The Beach festival for dogs Sunday, July 26.

The fun kicks off at 11 a.m. with registration and a hot dog dunking contest sponsored by Bay Café at 11:30 a.m. at Birch Bay.

Owner Heather Campbell said admission to the event is a dog toy, treat, or a donation to Whatcom Humane Society.

“It’s a fun day for people to come out with their dogs,” she said. “It’s a doggie thing.”

Other events include treasure hunt, a fancy dress costume contest at 1 p.m. sponsored by Evergreen Pet Supply, of Kent; an owner and pet look-alike contest at 1:30 p.m.; a pet talent contest at 2 p.m. sponsored by Upscale Puppy, of Blaine; and the shedding contest at 3 p.m. Central Pet of Seattle has also sponsored an ongoing “chuck-it” contest throughout the day.

A children’s fun pet show at noon will have categories for dogs with most waggiest tail, longest dog, shortest dog, fattest dog, and dogs with “the best licker.”

Campbell said she came up with the idea after talking with one of her vendors, Central Pet, of Seattle. The name was a spin-off from Bard On The Beach Shakespeare festival in Vancouver.

“We were talking about how bad the economy was and we thought, ‘why don’t we do something fun,’” she said. “Everyone loves their babies.”

Vendors include Pooch Palace, of Blaine; Sweat Penny Petwear; Placid Pet, of Bellingham; Pooch Palace, in Ferndale; J.P. Doghouse Chews, of Bellingham; and various rescue organizations such as Whatcom Humane Society.

“Rumor has it the border dogs are coming for the Chuck It contest,” Campbell added.

Prizes include $100 gift baskets from Dogswell, a dog treat company of California and giveaways for from J.P. Doghouse Chews, Central Pets and Evergreen Pet Supply.

All entrants will receive a prize.

Bow Wow & Woofs is also a corporate sponsor for Dog Days of Summer event in Bellingham, in which they host the official fashion show, a fundraiser for the Whatcom Humane Society.

Bow Wow & Woofs is open from 10 a.m. to 6:30 p.m. Monday through Friday and from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Saturday and from noon to 5 p.m. on Sunday. They are located at Birch Bay Square and can be reached by calling 332-DOGS.
