Boys & Girls clubs close Aug. 19

The last day Boys & Girls clubs of Whatcom County are open this summer is Wednesday, August 19. All branches reopen for the school year on Tuesday, September 2. For more information, visit  Blaine Club calendar will be posted September 2.

Whatcom Hospice seeks volunteers

The Whatcom Hospice organization is seeking volunteers to provide assistance to individuals facing life-threatening illnesses. Duties may include respite sitting, light chores, transportation, comfort, and friendship. Interested adults are invited to attend an informational meeting from 10 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Saturday, September 19 at 800 E. Chestnut Street in Bellingham in the lower level conference room. The training sessions are 5 to 8 p.m. Wednesday evenings and 8:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Saturdays beginning October 14 and ending November 14. For more information, call the Hospice Volunteer Coordinator at 756-6892.

Birch Bay Lions schedules blood drive

The Birch Bay Lion’s Club has scheduled a blood drive in Birch Bay to benefit the Puget Sound Blood Center. The event is scheduled from noon to 2:30 p.m. and 3:30 to 6 p.m. Monday, August 24 at the Birch Bay fire station at 4581 Birch Bay-Lynden Road in the parking lot. Meeting to discuss rural elements plan

The Whatcom County Planning Commission will hold a work session to consider changes to the Rural Element of the Whatcom County Comprehensive Plan and to Whatcom County’s development regulations pertaining to land uses and densities in rural areas of the county. The meeting is scheduled for 6:30 p.m. Thursday, August 13 at the Whatcom County Council chambers. For more information contact Gary Davis at 360/676-6907.

School board to discuss 2010 goals

The Blaine school district board of directors has scheduled a work session to discuss and review the 2009-2010 board and superintendent goals. The meeting is scheduled from 4 to 6 p.m. Tuesday, August 18 at the district office at 765 H Street. No action will be taken. For more information, call 332-5881.

Voters should mail their ballots early

Blaine and Birch Bay voters should get their mail-in ballots postmarked no later than Election Day, Tuesday, August 18 in order to be counted for the primary election.

Voters may also drop their ballot off at the curbside ballot drop boxes located at 311 Grand Avenue near the Courthouse Rotunda or at the Whatcom County Auditor’s Office, 311 Grand Ave., Bellingham until 8 p.m. on Election Day. In addition, voters may drop their ballots at Blaine city hall at 344 H Street  on Election Day from 7 a.m. to 8 p.m.

Rep. Ericksen to discuss healthcare

State representative Doug Ericksen (R.-42nd District) will discuss healthcare reform with the Ferndale Chamber of Commerce. The event is scheduled for noon, Wednesday, August 19 at the Silver Reef Casino’s Pavilion Room. For more information, call 786-7980.
