Amazing yards, amazing people, and an amazing community, sum up the 2009 Yard of the Week season. The Blaine is Beautiful committee presented its final award for the year and would like to thank all of the award winners as well as everyone who participated in Blaine to make their yards and gardens so incredible this year.

This is the committee’s third year presenting the Yard of the Week award and the number of outstanding yards and gardens grows each year.  Since the middle of May, the committee has been scouting Blaine neighborhoods for the best yards and gardens to nominate for the awards.  The community also participates by providing nominations for recognition of spouses or neighbors whom they appreciate for creating beautiful yards.

There were 18 yards that received the Yard of the Week award with an average of 6 nominations each week.  This year two of the awards were presented to non-residential properties in order to also recognize their landscaping efforts.

The highlight of serving on the committee is presenting the weekly award certificate and placing the Blaine is Beautiful sign in the yard for the week.  “It is such an awarding experience to meet each of the winners and to have them share their love of gardening with us” says June Auld committee member and Master Gardener.

It’s not too early to begin planning next year’s garden!  If you are interested in serving on the committee or would like more information about the Yard of the Week program, please contact Debbie Harger at the City of Blaine 360-332-8311.

We will be looking forward to next spring. It’s not too early to begin planning next year’s garden for next year.
