After some long days and nights, Gabrielle Esquiro’s grand opening for her sewing, alteration, laundry and dry cleaning shop called Rags to Stitches happened last Thursday.

“Work was hard to find in my field of administrative services, so I decided to do something I knew well, and this is it,” said the Birch Bay resident, who posted her business motto on the front door: “From bulletproof vests to bridemaids’ dresses.”

“Between those two extremes there’s bound to be a lot of business,” she laughed. She does the sewing and laundry orders herself but she sends the drycleaning twice a week to Dutch Cleaners in Lynden.

That may or may not have anything to do with Esquiro being “full-on Dutch” herself, she said, having been born in the Hague before moving to the U.S. when she was four. She lives in Birch Bay with her husband John Pleune, also Dutch, and her 15-year-old son Cody, a student at Blaine high school.

Rags to Stitches is open Monday through Friday 10 a.m. until 5 p.m. and on Saturdays from 10 a.m. until noon.

Rags to Stitches is located at 713 Third Street. For info, call  360/305-7758.
