Blaine city manager Gary Tomsic’s salary is not out of line with the salaries of other city managers and administrators in Whatcom County. That was the message from Blaine mayor Bonnie Onyon, speaking to attendees of a council meeting October 12.

Onyon said the clarification was needed following accusations from certain local developers and political candidates who claimed his annual compensation was nearly $150,000.

Onyon said Tomsic’s actual salary is $103,000 and that the $150,000 figure reflects the city manager expense budget, from which he is required to pay for transportation, travel, training, memberships and office supplies. The difference also covers retirement and medical benefits.

“Gary’s salary is actually $103,000, which is right in \line with other cities in our form of government and with their own power, water and sewer,” Onyon said. “He has been given no raises since he’s been here and has only been given cost of living increases. We have offered to increase his salary on several occassions but he has always turned it down.”

Onyon added that city administrators in Lynden and Ferndale make more than Tomsic and that Tomsic’s position actually encompasses more responsibility than an administrator because of the form of government Blaine has.
