Local soldier dies in Afghanistan

A Custer resident and 2006 Ferndale high school graduate was killed in Afghanistan November 5 after the vehicle he was traveling in was struck by an improvised explosive device.

In a statement released last week, Department of Defense said Spc. Aaron Aamot, 22, died along with Spc. Gary Gooch Jr., 22, of Ocala, Florida, while on duty in Jelewar, Afghanistan.

Aamot’s body will arrive home Thursday. The motorcade will arrive on Main Street in Ferndale around 3:15 p.m. and residents are asked to line up out of respect.


Bay Cafe to host annual Angel Tree

Bay Café is now accepting application for its third annual Angel Tree program that matches donated gifts to children in need.

To nominate a family or to donate, send information such as the gender and age as well as pant, shirt and shoe sizes to Tammy or Dave at the Bay Café.

Santa photos to raise funds for kids

Those wanting to get their photo with Santa while supporting families of children with disabilities can visit Drake Dojo from 3 to 6 p.m. December 5 at 7056 Portal Way #R-2.

Santa and his karate elves will be available for photos in an extra large chair and will hand out gifts to the children. Visitors can watch children practicing martial arts and participate in a small obstacle course. Cookies and juice will also be offered. Interested individuals should RSVP by November 30 by emailing birchbayjls@yahoo.com.


Blaine is beautiful in winter, too!

As part of the Holiday Harbor Lights festivities, the Blaine is Beautiful Committee will recognize the best decorated yards in Blaine with the Blaine is Beautiful “Star” Award from December 1 through December 21.
