Kim Miller, Lauri Walter and Mary Amsberry, owners of the Blaine Bouquets at 625 Peace Portal Drive, spent most of the Thanksgiving weekend making sure that Blaine wouldn’t be without a wine store for the holidays.

With help from Amsberry’s sons Alan and Eric, the three women turned 400 square feet of their store into a wine section.

And when permits come through shortly they’ll offer wine tasting events so customers can sample the interesting varieties of premium wines they carry that can’t be purchased at other Blaine stores.

They also carry the many accessories that appeal to wine aficionados, such as racks, glasses, bottle holders and openers, and have a mocha and hot chocolate machine as well.

The cozy nook has an old world kind of look, with large square tiles on the floor and leather walls. “Actually, we did all that with paint,” laughed Lauri Walter, “by carefully taping the plywood floor and by using a dry roller on the walls to make them look like leather.”

The three owners, along with Susan Postma, each took a roller and went over the walls first with red, then yellow, and finally brown paint and then with a dry roller. The result is a warm and appealing tone, just right for browsing their collection of wines priced from $9 to $40, plus other things like gluten-free beer.

“If customers don’t see what they want, we want them to ask,” Walter added. They also carry local products from the Dakota Creek winery and will add others, such as GLM. “We want to carry all the locally produced wines we can find,” she said.

Blaine Bouquets is open Monday through Friday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Saturdays from 10 a.m. until 2 p.m. For more information call 332-6700.
