“Epic!,” “Awesome,” “I can actually solo and solo hard! I can play jazz!” and “Without music, there is no reason to live.”

These remarks were typical of the evaluations by the 94 young musicians who attended Blaine Jazz Camp and Festival ’09.

The 20 professional musicians from near and far who came to teach were in agreement that this was an outstanding experience.

The students, instructors, counselors and mentors participated in four lunch hour and four evening concerts and a special event, the Big Band Swing Dance.

Bob Gray was a great host of events at the Blaine middle school.  Glenn Tuski made things work in the Performing Arts Center and on every stage indoors and out.

Ted DeCorso, director of the Sun Coast Symphony Orchestra did his usual magic as artistic director.  Bob Boulé kept our dorm students comfortable at Smuggler’s Inn, and many wonderful volunteers in our community housed our faculty for the week.

There are so many who make this Jazz Camp/Festival possible.  We couldn’t do this without the Blaine school district’s help.  Financial support from the city of Blaine with BTAC funds was essential, and many thanks go out to the over 50 individual donors and 20 businesses who contributed so generously to make this camp and festival a reality for so many of our teens. Sales of bricks and plaques on the G and H street plazas also helped keep us going and The Northern Light helped us keep everyone informed.

Beside the concerts related to the Jazz Festival, we were thrilled to present the Western Washington Faculty String Quartet in a wonderful concert in October, and then our annual Holiday concert, NOEL with the Whatcom Chorale in December.

In spite of their need to give up their central leadership roles, Bruce and Sandy Wolf have continued to help and advise the Pacific Arts Association.

Bob Boule served tirelessly as president of our board, and all our board members stepped up to major responsibilities with grace.

We look forward with excitement to 2010! We have a Valentine Evening with Tingstad and Rumbel on Saturday, February 13 and the wonderful Whatcom Symphony Orchestra coming up on Saturday, May 8.
Then we move right on to the Blaine Jazz Camp/ Festival 2010 from July 11 through 17.

Again - huge thanks go out for the generous support of the Blaine community! We could not do this without all of you!
