Local firefighters are gearing up for Saturday's Bicycle Safety Fair at the Blaine Elementary parking lot at the corner of H and Mitchell streets from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. The May 8 event is sponsored by North Whatcom Fire and Rescue and the Bellingham/Whatcom County IAFF Union Local 106.

The free event will feature a bike rodeo and safety course for kids to learn the rules of the road, and a drawing for prizes.  Kids may bring their own bike to ride through the course or borrow one of four provided by Everybody Bikes. There will also be free helmet checks, and a helmet giveaway for qualifying low-income families.

North Whatcom Fire and Rescue staff will also conduct safety checks and bike maintenance, according to Leslee Smith, who said many of her fellow staff members are avid cyclists.

In case of rain, the event will be moved to Blaine elementary school’s covered play area. For more information, contact North Whatcom Fire and Rescue at 360/332-4859.
