Whatcom County sheriff’s deputies enlisted the help of customs and border protection to find a Blaine man who allegedly broke into a storage unit in Birch Bay on Friday afternoon.

Around 1:30 p.m. on Friday, October 8, sheriff’s deputies responded to a report of burglary in the 5000 block of Anderson Road. The owner of a storage building came upon the suspect, 44-year-old Joseph Dean Roy, after he had already broken into the building. After the building’s owner confronted the man, Roy reportedly assaulted the owner and fled the area.

Sheriff’s deputies set out to find Roy, using a K9 unit and assistance from a customs and border protection helicopter. Following up on a tip from a local resident, deputies were able to find Roy using the K9 unit.

Roy was arrested after being found hiding on the deck of a house in the 8200 block of Beach Way. He was booked into county jail under investigation of burglary and theft charges. Stolen property was found along with Roy and returned to its owner.
