North Whatcom Fire and Rescue responded to a call at a Blaine nut factory on Tuesday, November 16 after a peanut roaster caught fire and triggered an automatic alarm.

No injuries were reported.

The fire occurred around 3:45 p.m. at the Golden Nut Company facility on Odell Street just north of fire station 61, division chief Henry Hollander said.

Despite a large plume of smoke, he explained firefighters spent most of their time on scene cleaning up excess water from the facility’s automatic sprinkler system.

“The automatic fire suppression system did its job,” Hollander said. “Everything worked the way it was supposed to.”
