For the 28th year in a row, those needing a brisk wake-up call will gather with other like-minded residents and visitors to plunge into the icy waters of Birch Bay on January 1 in the Birch Bay Polar Bear Plunge, sponsored by the Birch Bay Chamber of Commerce. As always, getting dressed up in costumes is encouraged.
The frigid plunge takes place at noon sharp on the waterfront between the Birch Bay Chamber Visitor Information Center and CJ’s Beach House. Registration is free and will start at 9:30 a.m. Costume judging will take place at 11:30 a.m.
New to the event, Brrrr the Bear will make an appearance, and kids and adults can buy pictures with the chilly ursine mascot. T-shirts commemorating the chilly splash will also be for sale.
On New Year’s Eve, local residents are also invited to participate in the Birch Bay Ring of Fire and Hope, which starts at 7 p.m. Everyone is encouraged to bring a spike-less road flare and join in a celebration of hope for the New Year.Flares, donated by Windermere Realty, will be available at the Birch Bay Visitor Information Center while supplies last.
