Two high school Knowledge Bowl teams from Blaine will be in the district 2A playoffs this Monday.
The Blaine teams, in addition to five others from across the county, will compete in at Blaine high school on Monday, February 7, from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m.
Blaine’s Knowledge Bowl teams have qualified for district playoffs every year they have participated since 1985, team coach John Freal said in an e-mail. Blaine’s teams have won two state championships and four finishes in the top three, he said.
Blaine’s 2010/2011 teams consist of: Garrett Campbell, Andrew Dahl, Charisse DeBelen, Shelby Dufton, Martell Hesketh, Emily Kramme, Krista Morley, Katie Mower, Perry Olason, Jana Otero, Emily Steelquist and Isaac Wilkowski.
Next Friday and Saturday will bring the best high school chess players in the state to Blaine high school for the first time in 44 years.
The Washington State High School Chess Team championships will be held in Blaine on Friday, February 11, and Saturday, February 12.
This is the first time the state high school chess team championships have been held anywhere in Whatcom County in their 44-year history.
Teams from Blaine, Lynden, Lynden Christian, Mount Baker, Sedro-Woolley and Sehome high schools will be in attendance representing Whatcom County.
Friday’s rounds start at 4:15 and 7 p.m., and Saturday’s rounds start at 9 a.m., 1 p.m. and 5 p.m. with awards being given from 8:30 to 9:30 Saturday night.
