Blaine youth wins geography bee

Blaine middle school student Chase Loisel, of Blaine, was named a semi-finalist eligible to compete in the 2011 Washington Geographic Bee, sponsored by Google and Plum Creek.

Students who earned the top 100 scores were invited to compete at the level. Winners will receive $100, and a National Geographic DVD and a trip to Washington, D.C., where he or she will represent Washington state in the national finals at the National Geographic Society headquarters May 24 and 25.

The first place winner will receive a $25,000 scholarship and lifetime membership to the society, as well as an all-expenses paid trip to the Galapagos Islands with a parent or guardian.

The 2011 Washington Geographic Bee is scheduled for Friday, April 1, at Pacific Lutheran University in Seattle.
