SSA Marine spokesperson Craig Cole delivered a presentation to Blaine City Council Monday regarding the company’s Gateway Pacific Terminal project slated for Cherry Point. Although there was no scheduled time for public comment, several audience members spoke during the regular part of the meeting. Several, such as Chris Johnson, a business manager for a labor union in Bellingham, spoke in favor of the project, adding that with recent economic factors, Whatcom County’s unemployed are “struggling mightily.” Others, such as Blaine resident Trevor Hoskins, urged council members to learn more about the project’s potential impacts before endorsing it. “I hope this council will reserve their opinion until we can guarantee residents here won’t be negatively affected.”
