A former Blaine high school teacher and author who recently sold movie rights to Disney will speak about his new young adult adventure novel “Aliens on Vacation” next week in Bellingham.

Clete Smith will launch his debut novel at a book release party at 5 p.m. Thursday, May 5, at Village Books in Fairhaven. The event will include a reading, Q&A session and book signing. Refreshments and children’s giveaways will be provided.

The book, published by Disney-Hyperion, is a follow-up to his “Intergalactic Bed & Breakfast” series. The science fiction adventure follows a 12-year-old boy who gets a summer job at his grandmother’s inn in a fictional town near Mt. Baker, only to discover it is an undercover operation that allows space aliens to vacation on Earth in disguise.

The previous series sold in seven other countries, including Brazil, Russia, Germany, France, Italy, Portugal and Turkey. Disney Films is also optioning his first book under the title “Grandma’s Intergalactic Bed & Breakfast.”

A lifelong resident of the Pacific Northwest, Smith attended Sehome high school and Western Washington University before earning a masters in fine arts in writing for children and young adults from the Vermont College of Fine Arts. Before launching his writing career, Smith taught high school English at Nooksack Valley, Bellingham and Blaine high school.
