The North Whatcom Fire and Rescue Service (NWFRS) is entering final negotiations to consolidate services with Fire District 4 and planning on an implementation date of July 1.

NWFRS chief Tom Fields told the NWFRS board of fire commissioners at their regular meeting on April 21 the contract between the two districts is about halfway completed. The consolidation would allow NWFRS staff to respond more effectively to emergencies in the southeast part of their district.

Fields also updated the board on Michael Bleakney, who has not paid the agreed-upon fire mitigation fees for four storage buildings he is constructing near Blaine and Birch Bay-Lynden roads.

Field said Bleakney attempted to pay a portion of the required $6,880, but the fire district does not accept partial payments.
