Photographer David Riffle called this shot “quite a catch.” After some research, he identified it as a marbled godwit (Limosa fedoa), which breeds in the center of the continent and winters along the coasts.

It has been spotted in California, but Riffle was unable to find mention of sightings in northwest Washington.
