The RE Sources for Sustainable Communities 2011 environmental heroes have been announced, and Birch Bay’s Jerry Larson will be honored with a lifetime achievement award at the September 17 ceremony.

Larson passed away in January 2011 and is survived by his family. He served with multiple marine organizations including the Nooksack Salmon Enhancement Association, the Washington Shellfish Advisory Committee, Friends of Birch Bay State Park, the Marine Resources Committee and Birch Bay Watershed Aquatic Resource Management.

RE Sources cited his “lifelong diligence,” volunteer efforts, advocacy and leadership within the county among the reasons for the honor.

The awards ceremony will be Saturday, September 17, at the Hotel Bellwether with a 5:30 p.m. cocktail hour and 7 p.m. dinner. Tickets are $50. The keynote speaker will be Denis Hayes, coordinator of the first Earth Day and Time magazine’s “hero of the planet.”

If you’d like to sit at a table reserved specifically for those honoring Larson, email Wendy Steffensen before August 26 at waters@re-sources.org to reserve a space.
