Blaine photographer David Riffle captured this photo of an aging boat resting outside the old cannery building on Semiahmoo Spit earlier this week. He said he’s taken this same photo dozens of times, and always comes up with something different.
It all comes down to lighting creating expressive images that tell a dramatic story, Riffle said, and allowing striking shadows to enhance one’s compositions. There are times when shadows are not welcomed in a photograph, but then there are times when shadows express feelings and make a composition compelling, he added.
“‘I am just an old man with a camera’ is what I usually say to people,” Riffle said, “but in reality I enjoy expressing a story within my photographs.”
