A Birch Bay resident who allegedly threatened his stepfather with a shotgun was arrested Sunday night after an eight-hour standoff with Whatcom County sheriff’s deputies.

Deputies responded to the Jacob’s Landing condominiums on Birch Bay Drive about 2:30 p.m. on Sunday, December 4, after a man called 911 saying his stepson was threatening him with a shotgun, sheriff’s deputy Beth Larson said. Upon arrival, deputies attempted to call the stepson, 46-year-old David S. Sutherland, but received no reply. The standoff closed a portion of Birch Bay Drive for several hours.

After hours of negotiating with Sutherland, the sheriff’s office’s special response team entered Sutherland’s condominium and took him into custody without incident at about 10 p.m.

Sutherland was booked into the Whatcom County jail under suspicion of first-degree assault, domestic violence. No injuries were reported.
