Blaine police have arrested a 20-year-old Bellingham man in connection with a shooting that occurred Sunday evening in the Golden Nut Company parking lot on Odell Road.
Late Monday, December 5, Blaine police arrested 20-year-old Rogelio Fernando-Salano at his family’s home in Bellingham on suspicion of first degree assault. Fernando-Salano is suspected of shooting a 20-year-old Blaine man in the nut processing plant’s parking lot. Blaine police chief Mike Haslip said there is evidence Fernando-Salano did not act alone in the shooting, and Blaine Police are still conducting an investigation into the incident.
At about 6:30 p.m. on Sunday, December 4, Blaine Police responded to a report of a shooting at the Golden Nut Company and found the wounded 20-year-old, who had walked back into the building, being tended to by his coworkers, Haslip said. The man told police an individual sitting in a parked car in the parking lot shot him and then drove off.
Blaine police learned the victim had been in an argument with Fernando-Salano earlier in the day.
The victim was taken to St. Joseph Hospital in Bellingham and released following treatment of his upper chest wound. No one else was injured as a result of the shooting.
Fernando-Salano’s dark blue Chevrolet pickup truck, believed to have been used in the shooting, was impounded. Blaine police received help from the Bellingham Police Department, Whatcom County Sheriff’s Office and the U.S. Border Patrol in investigating the shooting and arresting Fernando-Salano.
