A $500 scholarship to aid a Blaine High School senior whose family is involved in the fishing industry will be offered for the first time this spring.
The Fishermen’s Memorial Committee, which organizes the annual Blessing of the Fleet ceremony, is offering the scholarship, committee chair Gary Dunster said. Eligible students will be required to write an essay explaining their connection to the fishing industry and why they deserve the scholarship.
“We’ll review the applications and go from there,” Dunster said.
The committee had some money that they felt could be put to good use by establishing a scholarship.
“We want to put [the money] back into the community, and we can’t think of a better way than to help the youth,” Dunster said.
Blaine High School counselor Rick Shockey will help manage the scholarship applications. For more information, contact Shockey at 360/332-6045 or email@example.com.
