The Blaine school district will once again be host to the Washington State Middle School Math Championships this year, and organizers are looking for volunteers to help run the competition.

The Blaine school district and the ConocoPhillips Ferndale Refinery are sponsoring the event, open to fifth through eighth graders from both public and private Washington schools. Nearly 1,000 students from 70 schools across the state are expected to compete.

Championship organizers are seeking volunteers to ensure student teams are in the correct classrooms, explain and enforce rules and read mental math questions aloud. Volunteers do not need math skills. Organizers are looking for approximately 60 volunteers.

Volunteer orientation starts at 8 a.m. on Saturday, April 28, while classroom supervision runs from 9:30 a.m. to 12:15 p.m. Volunteers should report to the Blaine Performing Arts Center for classroom assignments.
