A Birch Bay woman is without a home after a man allegedly doused her travel trailer in gasoline and set it on fire.
North Whatcom Fire and Rescue (NWFR) crews responded to the 600 block of Harborview Road at 7:30 p.m. on June 5 to find a travel trailer fully engulfed in flames, NWFR assistant chief Jeff Hofstad said. Firefighters were able to extinguish the fire in about 10 minutes, but the trailer was totally destroyed.
After the fire was extinguished, Whatcom County sheriff’s deputies arrived to take Travis W. Bruneau, 28, into custody. Bruneau, who claimed to live in the trailer with his girlfriend, was arrested on suspicion of first degree arson, fourth degree assault–domestic violence, and other minor charges, said Sean Crisp, a sergeant with the county sheriff’s office.
Whatcom County undersheriff Jeff Parks said the sheriff’s office had received a number of domestic violence calls involving Bruneau.
The woman who lived in the trailer was not home at the time, and she lost all her belongings. Volunteers from the Mt. Baker chapter of the Red Cross were on hand after the fire to provide the woman with food, clothing, shoes and three nights stay at a local hotel.
