Creating Hope Today’s second annual Kid’s Day, garage sale, and BBQ fundraiser will be held Saturday and Sunday, July 7 and 8, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. at Semiahmoo Kids Kamp. The garage sale, with items sold by donation, will continue through Sunday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.

The Kid’s Day events will be as much fun as last year, but there will be lots more activities and food vendors. Big Al’s Diner will donate hot dogs, and Jump Around Fun Zone will loan out bouncy houses. Northern Meadows 4-H will provide a petting zoo, and Blaine High School cheerleaders will do face painting. The Price family hired Dan the Magic Man to perform, and North Whatcom Fire and Rescue will also make an appearance with a fire truck.

Creating Hope Today is a non-profit that was started last year by five mothers who wanted to raise money for a friend needing a van with a wheelchair lift, co-founder Michelle Sturtz said. While the group has yet to meet this goal, it has donated money in other ways, such as helping families pay for groceries and bills during the holidays, Sturtz said. After they raise money for the van, their goal is to take on smaller projects.

Last year’s event raised about $6,000, but their goal this year is to raise $30,000, which would be enough to buy the van.
Creating Hope Today needs picnic tables for the event, as well as a printer or signage sponsor.

They will accept almost any item for the garage sale, especially clothing and furniture, but not electronics. The event depends greatly on volunteers. About 35 volunteers outside of the organization have made the event possible this year. It’s not too late to help out, and volunteers are still welcome.

Creating Hope Today will have a float in the Fourth of July parade in Blaine and volunteers will pass out fliers to raise awareness about the organization. They will also have a booth and sell baked goods, T-shirts, candles and other items during the July 4 festivities.
