The 11th annual Run to the Border fundraiser will be held at Marine Park on Saturday, August 4.

The fundraiser begins with the Kids Marine Mile fun run at 8:30 a.m., which will be three laps around the park, followed by the 5K Run to the Border race at 9 a.m., from Marine Park through neighborhoods and side streets to Peace Arch State Park and back.

The event will benefit Let’s Move Blaine!, which aims to combat childhood obesity, support healthy community activities, and  get people to spend time outside, moving and staying healthy, said Dan Persse, coordinator of Let’s Move Blaine!

The group plans to use the money for the Passport to Fun program, in which children can have a card stamped for participating in healthy activities. They also plan to create maps highlighting local walking routes, which will be distributed at Blaine and Birch Bay parks. The map project will take about two years to complete, Persse said.

In addition, Let’s Move Blaine! supports after-school programs and is working in partnership with the Blaine Boys & Girls Club to create a youth-led farmer’s market.

Persse said the fundraiser is in need of about 15 volunteers to run the event as well as participants to run.
