On October 31, an unresponsive Blaine infant was admitted to PeaceHealth St. Joseph Medical Center in Bellingham with head and brain injuries. The child’s father, Melvin C. Johnson, 31, was arrested under investigation of assaulting the boy.

Examinations by medical staff at the hospital revealed that in addition to his extensive injuries, the four-month-old child had also suffered previous injuries, including fractured bones and head trauma. As an investigation into the cause of these injuries got underway, the child was airlifted to Harborview Medical Center in Seattle, where he remained in critical condition as of Wednesday, November 7.

The infant’s father admitted to police that he had thrown the child to the ground. He has been booked into Whatcom County Jail on one charge of assault of a minor in the first degree. Johnson’s bail has been set at $250,000 and he will remain in custody until his arraignment on November 16. Investigation continues with the assistance of DSHS, Seattle Police, Bellingham Police and the Whatcom County Prosecutor’s Office.
