A collision on February 14 slowed traffic on I-5 after 80-year-old Leonard Bessner from West Vancouver swerved in front of a
semi truck on I-5 southbound near mile marker 274. The semi was unable to stop and rear-ended the Bessner’s Mercedes, sending it into the median. The semi came to a rest on the inside shoulder of the highway blocking one lane.

Washington State Patrol reported that Bessner was attempting to make an illegal U-turn in the median and did not see the semi. Witnesses said Bessner’s vehicle had been weaving and it appeared that Bessner was confused.

North Whatcom Fire and Rescue responders assisted Bessner, who was able to walk away from the accident, and treated him for injuries. He was taken to PeaceHealth St. Joseph hospital as a precaution.

The truck driver, Ashot Abaryan, was uninjured. “He started swerving and all of a sudden turned in front of my truck. My truck just won’t stop that quick,” Abaryan said. Blaine police
blocked traffic on the inside lane and Washington State Patrol took over the investigation.

Bessner’s car was totaled and impounded, while the semi received about $1,000 of damage. Charges are pending.
