Results for the 2013 Birch Bay Marathon are in and Bellingham native Bronwyn Crossman shattered the women’s course
record with a time of 2:53:12, taking third place overall. The previous record of 3:13:04 was set by Barb Southan in 1979.
Crossman, 23, graduated from Squalicum high school in 2007. She graduated from University of Oregon in 2012, and was a NCAA All-American at 10,000 meters in 2011. She lives in Eugene, Oregon.
The 45th Birch Bay Marathon was run February 17 with 99 runners competing in the marathon and 279 running the half-marathon. Chuck Engle, 41, from Coos Bay, Oregon was the men’s and overall marathon winner with a time of 2:46:03. That time is a course record for 41-year-olds, beating the previous record of 2:48:41 set in 1985 by more than two minutes.
It was Engle’s 300th marathon, and he said he was happy to have achieved this personal landmark on a course with a history of talented runners.
“That course has been raced by so many amazing athletes in the past,” Engle said.
Record-holding and Olympic-qualifying greats such as Jim Pearson, Jim Freeman and Mark Anderson have run the Birch Bay Marathon. Pearson, who first organized the annual race in 1968, set an American record in 1975 running 50 miles in 5:12:41.
Engle said this year’s race was “serene and tranquil,” with “phenomenal weather for that time of year.”
