Blaine high school student David Shapiro has been awarded the Eagle Scout award from the Boy Scouts of America. Shapiro
is a member of Troop 4003 in Bellingham, and his Eagle Scout project involved work on a Nooksack Salmon Enhancement Association site along Squalicum Parkway in Bellingham.

For the project, Shapiro organized work parties and totaled more than 200 volunteer hours to remove garbage, mulch the trails, and pull invasive plants that surrounded the creek and trails.

He then planted 50 native plants to take their place, to create a healthier riparian zone for the watershed area.

Shapiro also took out an old bench that had been destroyed and built and set two new benches in its place.
